A week in Madrid
It was my fiancé Matts 33rd birthday in February so we decided to have a nice week away somewhere abroad as we hadn't been away since 2015. we wanted somewhere not to far away as I'm not a big fan of flying so we decided on spain and its capital Madrid.
Madrid is a 2and a half hour flight from Newcastle and then its about 30-45 mins to the centre from the airport.
We chose a central hotel called Hotel Santo Domingo.

The entrance to Hotel Santo Domingo
This hotel is just off the Gran Via the main shopping street in Madrid. straight across the road from the hotel is a metro station which is on line 2 of the Madrid Metro however this hotel is within easy walking distance of most of the main tourist areas of the city.
We wanted to do all the touristy things so we bought a guide book before we went and decided what we wanted to do here's a day by day break down of what we did.
Day 1 - was a Saturday we decided to go out for breakfast however nothing opens till at least 10am so we ended up at mcdonalds as us English do. Then we went to Athletico Madrid Stadium to do the tour which we had pre-booked. it is a self guided tour but it doesn't state that on the ticket so just to let you know.
Day 2 - Sunday - we woke up and it was a lovely sunny day so we decided to go to the zoo. It is quite simple to get to on the metro as its close to 2 metro stations. however I would suggest getting off at Batan rather than casa de campo. The price for the tickets were 25euros each. however it was worth every cent. we spent all day there. it was amazing so many animals and they had shows on and everything would highly recommend.
Day 3 - Monday - we decided to go to Real Madrid Stadium (my fiancé is very obsessed with football). we had pre booked this. it was worth a visit for a footy fan, me however not so much lol
Day 4 and Day 5 - Tueday and Wednesday - we decided to do a city sightseeing hop on hop off tour bus. There are 2 different lines one historical and one modern. they show you around the whole city places you may not see by yourself. I would suggest that if you were to do it wrap up warm.
Day 6 - Thursday - we didn't to investigate and wander around Retiro Park there is a boating lake and it is a beautiful place
